September is Workforce Development Month!
When Makail was first referred to the Youth Employment Services (YES) Program, he had recently dropped out of high school and was on juvenile probation. At first, he resisted, but after seeing how the program helped his siblings, he decided to join.
YES staff coordinated with the courts and his school to get him on the right path. Makail enrolled in Buckeye Career Center’s Adult Diploma Program, where he earned both his high school diploma and a welding certification—paving the way toward a bright future.
Alongside his training, YES supported him with work experience, job readiness skills, and interview preparation. His first interview with Bell Stores led to a job offer on the spot. Makail worked hard, bought a bike so he could get to work, and later secured housing through the Tuscarawas Metropolitan Housing Authority.
Today, Makail is working, saving for a car, and focused on pursuing a welding career. His journey is proof that integrated systems create stronger, more efficient pathways by ensuring individuals like him can access education, training, and resources that open doors to opportunity.
